What is the Sports Premium?

The government is providing funding of £150 million per annum and has said they will commit funding to 2020, with a further £750 million to be invested over the course of the next parliament.

The purpose of this is to improve the provision of physical education and sport in primary schools. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport and will see money going directly to primary school head teachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for their pupils.

Each school will receive £16,000 plus £10 per pupil each year. Here at Edlesborough Primary Academy, that will mean around £17,500 per year.

Purpose of the Funding

The School Sport Premium money is ring fenced and can only be spent on Physical Education and sport provision in school. Schools are expected to spend the funding on improving and enhancing their provision of physical education and sport, but we will have the freedom to choose how to do this.

How will we spend our allocation at Edlesborough Primary Academy?

PE and Sport is important and valued at Edlesborough Primary Academy and this funding will help us to enhance and sustain current and future progression.

The rationale for the use of Sports Premium funding is that it must be used so that:

  • all children benefit regardless of sporting ability
  • children are given the opportunity to compete in tournaments with other schools
  • staff have access to training opportunities and continued professional development
  • we make use of collaborative and partnership working

With the above rationale in mind, and following the guidelines for appropriate use of the Sports Premium funding set out by the government, our future plans for the use of the Sports Premium funding include:

  • Investment in the professional development of teachers so that they are best equipped to teach high quality lessons.  This will include providing cover to release staff to do this.
  • Continued membership AVPSAA and AVPSFA
  • Membership to the Tring Primary School's Cup
  • Making links to other community sports providers – encouraging pupils to join local sports clubs outside school.
  • Encouraging our pupils to improve their leadership skills through sport – through sports leader initiative (Huff & Puff and Sports Crew).
  • Increasing opportunities for extra-curricular activities for all pupils during the lunch hour
  • Increasing opportunities for extra-curricular activities for KS1 pupils after school
  • Updating and replacing Nature Trails for KS1 and KS2
  • Purchasing digital cameras for pupil use to self and peer evaluate performance
  • Updating and replacing PE and sports equipment
  • Incentives for Mile a Day scheme

What impact will this funding have?

We regularly evaluate the impact of the Sports Premium money as part of our normal self-evaluation.  We also look at how well we use our Sport Premium money to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sporting provision, including increasing participation in PE and Sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.

Measuring the impact of the activities provided with Sports Premium money can be achieved in different ways. We will look at progress in PE as well as other areas of development such as self-esteem, confidence and the numbers of pupils involved in sporting activities in and out of school. We will also evaluate the impact of professional development opportunities in improving teaching and learning in PE.
